I never planned to find magic in backstreets, but Iloilo has a way of sneaking up on you. That morning, the sun was just beginning to warm the red-tiled roofs, and the air smelled faintly of salt and sizzling garlic from nearby eateries. My friends and I had our usual map open, debating whether to hit the main tourist spots first, but I had a hunch: some of the best moments would come from letting the car—and curiosity—lead.

That’s why we had rented a car through Connect And Ride. Public transport has its charms, sure, but there’s nothing quite like sliding into a comfortable seat, rolling down the windows, and feeling the city unfold at your own pace.

The Hidden Cafés of Jaro

Our first “mistake” was a wrong turn—or perhaps it was serendipity. A narrow street led us to a tiny café tucked between pastel-colored houses. Inside, the aroma of fresh coffee mingled with the scent of baked bread. The barista, an older woman with a contagious smile, shared the story of her homemade pastries.

We lingered. Laughed. Took a few photos. And all the while, our little hatchback from Connect And Ride waited patiently outside, parked on the quiet street, ready to whisk us to the next adventure.

Sunsets Along the Iloilo River

By mid-afternoon, we found ourselves near the riverbank, the water reflecting the city in soft, rippling light. The traffic was still there, but with our own car, it never felt like a burden—more like part of the scenery.

A fisherman waved as we slowed down, untangling his nets. Somewhere behind us, children splashed in the shallow waters. The golden light caught on the historic bridges, and I realized we were witnessing a side of Iloilo most guides never mention. It was quiet, intimate, fleeting.

Spontaneous Detours to Nature

The best part of having a car was the detours. We spotted a sign for a hidden waterfall outside the city. Google Maps called it “risky,” but the little Connect And Ride car hugged the narrow dirt roads like it belonged there. And there it was: cascading water, sunlight glinting through the leaves, and a rare silence that felt like it had been waiting just for us.

No bus schedule, no waiting in line, no rush. Just us, the car, and the unexpected beauty of Iloilo’s outskirts.

A Local Snack Break

Somewhere along the ride back, we pulled over at a roadside stall selling puto and fresh mango slices. We sat on the low wooden benches, laughing at our messy fingers as juice dripped onto the pavement. In moments like this, renting a car doesn’t feel like a convenience—it feels like freedom. Freedom to stop where you want, linger as long as you like, and discover the city one small story at a time.

Reflecting on the Day

By the time we returned the car, the sun had dipped low, painting the sky with streaks of orange and lavender. We were tired, sun-kissed, and full of small, unexpected memories: a smile from a stranger, a hidden café, a waterfall discovered by chance. Iloilo had felt vast, layered, and welcoming, and a big part of that was the freedom to explore it without constraints.

Connect And Ride had done more than provide a vehicle—it had given us a rhythm, a gentle guide to the city’s secret corners. As we walked away that evening, I realized the best attractions aren’t just the famous spots—they’re the ones you stumble upon, the ones that surprise you, and the ones that make you want to come back.
